The XC90 is an incredibly practical car, but for 3k, you're not going to get a great one. Id get a manual D5 V70 in your situation, you can probably get one in decent condition for that price. Volvo parts do seem to be generally expensive though - so try and leave a bit of breathing room in your budget. Not a very good first car. However a v70/s60 with T5 would be a great one.
